To do the job you need the following tools: ladder, locking pliers, sockets & ratchet 3/8″ – 7/16″ – 1/2″ – 9/16″, C clamps, winding bars, file.
Step 1. In order to prevent any activation by accident, you need to unplug and remove the garage door opener from the door.
Step 2. ou need to shut and lock the door and put a tight clamp on the track above any roller.
Step 3. Unwind the existing torsion springs. if your door has two torsion springs, you need to unwind the spring that is not broken. While unwinding it, you need to count the number of 1/4 turns removed because you’ll have to use the same number 01 1/4 turns when winding in the new spring.
Step 4. Take out the cables and cable drums. Put your ladder on each side of the cable drums and get their screws loose. Next, take out the cable from the drum and move the cable drum away from the head plate.
Step 5. Take out the snapped torsion spring.
Step 6. Inspect and replace the cable with a new one if needed.
Step 7. Place the new spring on the shaft, put the cable drum back into the shaft as well and put the shaft back into the head plate. Repeat this operation for the other spring. Don’t tie the screws just yet. Put your ladder in the middle of the door and bolt the springs to center bearing plate.
Step 8. Set the cables.
Step 9. Wind up the springs.
Step 10. Test the door.
Step 11. Put back the garage door opener, plug it into a power outlet and test it again.
